Bangladesh ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal has stepped down from the role, the 34-year-old announced on Thursday.

“I thought that it would be better for the betterment of my team to step down,” Tamim said adding that he informed the Prime Minister about his decision.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus confirmed that Tamim would not return as a player for the upcoming Asia Cup but will make himself available for the World Cup in India.

The BCB is yet to decide on who would lead the Tigers in the Asia Cup.

Bangladesh begin their Asia Cup challenge on August 31 when they will take on Sri Lanka in Kandy. The Tigers will face Afghanistan in their final group-stage fixture on September 3.
